Installing an eSIM takes about two minutes and one QR code. Install an eSIM on iPhone

Have the eSIM QR code ready on another screen, or save the activation as a photo. On iOS 17+ you can also install from a photo in your library.

Tap Add eSIM (or Add Cellular Plan), then Use QR Code.

Point the camera at the QR code and let it read. If you saved it as an image, choose Open Photos and select it.

Name it something obvious like "Travel — Japan" so you can tell it apart from your home line.

Set your default lines
Keep your primary line for calls/iMessage; set Cellular Data to the new travel eSIM. Leave "Allow Cellular Data Switching" off to avoid using your home line by accident.

Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM
Settings → Cellular → tap the travel eSIM → turn Data Roaming on. This lets the eSIM use its local partner network; it does not add roaming charges to your plan.

In the SIMs screen, set Mobile data to the travel eSIM. Keep your home SIM for calls and texts.

Turn on Roaming for the eSIM
Open the travel eSIM and enable Roaming so it can connect to the local partner network abroad.
If it does not connect
- Confirm Data Roaming is on for the travel eSIM (the most common cause).
- Check that Mobile Data is pointed at the eSIM, not your home line.
- Toggle Airplane mode on and off, or restart the phone, to force a fresh network search.
- In Network selection, switch from Automatic to manual and pick a listed local network.
- Make sure you have actually arrived in the coverage area — most plans only connect once you are in-country.
